Translated to “Future Toyota Ultimate”, the FT-1 jumped from the virtual world of the Sony PlayStation Gran Turismo game into reality when it was unveiled at the 2014 North American International Auto Show.
Designed by Calty Design Research who started the project two years ago, the FT-1 Concept gets some ideas from the FT-HS Concept and Lexus LF-LC Concept which were Calty’s sports car concept works in 2007 and 2012 respectively. In addition, the FT-1 Concept design was also influenced by some of the past Toyota’s sports cars, particularly the Supra and Celica.
The Toyota FT-1 Concept features an exterior called “Function-sculpting” which makes the body “expressive” and “muscular”, yet “curved” like being “shaped by the wind”.
Vents, ducting, inlets, and retractable rear wing are parts of the exterior aerodynamic design that help improve airflow and increase downforce.
With an F1 inspired steering wheel and the minimalist design with optimized-cornering-vision A-pillars placement, the cockpit is highly functional for its racing purposes.
Technical specifications haven’t been released, but one can imagine a powerful engine underneath a see-through glass hood.
